Scandal Season 5 Episode 3 "Paris is Burning" Thoughts
Hey y'all.
It's been a while, I know. But dass okay. I'm here now! & I got some thoughts.
As many of you know, I am a GINORMOUS Scandal fan & last night's episode, "Paris is Burning" TOOK. ME. OUT. Wig & all.
So I just HAD to share my thoughts. This is not a review. I'll be addressing things from the episode and things I've seen & heard on twitter, tumblr, other reviews, etc.. This probably won't be long.
Anyways. I'm still enjoying my favorite show. Some things from the episode made me
Olivia said "Yes"! & I got a hallelujah in my spirit. FINALLY she's walking in the truth. & Fitz couldn't be happier.
Mellie is the worst martyr in the history of martyrs b/c the thing she can't seem to get through her thick head of hair is NOBODY ASKED HER TO DO THE THINGS SHE DID! Least of all, Fitz. & then she has the nerve to hold it against him! Thank you, but nobody asked. & most of the things she did made things worse. He has wanted to play above board & she continues to be conniving for him herself.
1)Nobody asked her to lie by omission about being raped by Big Gerry for 15 years.
2)Nobody asked her to lie about having a miscarriage.
3)Nobody asked her to conceive baby Teddy as a cover up for the Olitz audio sex tape.
4)Nobody asked her to "allow" Olivia to continue sleeping w/ Fitz.
5)Nobody asked her to stand by Fitz's side while he was openly in love with/sleeping with Olivia.
It's been a while, I know. But dass okay. I'm here now! & I got some thoughts.

FIRST THINGS FIRST. I must vent.
Some Scandal viewers are way too much. They complain how much they miss the "old Scandal" and how much they want season 1 & 2 back...and when we get a season 1/2 type episode(s), they still mad! Please allow me to give these gentle reminders:
a) Olivia and Fitz are together at frickin last. Finally. That's a fact. It's on the poster. It's legit. So whatever happens, they're going to be together--at least for this season. For some TV shows, it only takes a season or two to get the "main couple" together, Scandal is different because he's the married President of the United States. Olivia & Fitz will constantly be fighting to be a "normal couple" as long as he's president. 9 times outta 10, Scandal is not going to look like how we imagine in our heads in the time frame we create. The sooner that is understood, the better the viewing experience will be.
2) Seasons 1 & 2 focused on the "triangle" of Olivia/Fitz/Melody. The writers went off in seasons 3-4 and made some weird polygon of a shape with Oliva/Fitz/Jake/a little bit of Mellie/Andrew/and even Liz nasty crass. They let that go in Season 5 and went back to the real "triangle", the original "triangle" and it's trash? Because Olivia still won't stand up for herself (which I'm not much a fan of...more on that later), Mellie's still trying to "destroy" Olivia & Fitz is making googly eyes at Olivia from across the room? THAT'S ALL FROM SEASONS 1 & 2! Y'all don't dig that? I'm confused.
but I thoroughly enjoyed it b/c it's a roller coaster I signed up to ride. And I ain't getting off.
I don't got much to say about him except he does ANYTHING Olivia says. It's hilarious to me. I joked on twitter last night:
I honestly like seeing Fitz being submissive to Olivia. People think it's only the woman that should submit, but the man needs to submit as well. That's biblical. The only thing is it seems like Fitz can't think for himself. But I know that's not the case. He's just hype b/c bae finally running the world with him. lol
Mellie.
I can't tell y'all how many times I told Mellie to shut up/let it go last night.
6)Nobody asked her to rig a national election.
etc. etc.
These are all decisions she made on her own. So this cry about being a "team" is nauseating to me because she was never a true teammate to Fitz.
She only wanted him to be her partner when it was convenient--when it was time for her to run for senator.
I want so much more for Sister Melody Grant and even though I told her to STFU 99% of this episode, by the end I was proud of her b/c she finally took a step in the right direction. Cuz she can't be in the closet of the Residence drinking hooch & giving Olivia a very real dosage of the realities of being FLOTUS while simultaneously fighting to remain FLOTUS. That's mad backwards. Something's gotta give at some point and she gotta want more for herself. I hope she's on a journey to discovering her worth.
ps:
Olivia.
You better walk up in the White House like the bad bish you are! You better tell the President of the United States what he will and won't do! You better choose your man!
But I'm gonna need you to not be talking about your feelings to Jake. Because he keep getting ideas like you want him when I've heard you state very clearly that you don't. In NYC, if you feed the filthy squirrels in the park nuts and such, they'll keep coming around for more. Squirrels should not be near humans...is all I'm saying. *sn: my interpretation of "I think I made a mistake" is she thinks she made a mistake of saying Yes at that moment. Trust. She don't have any regrets of being with Fitzgerald Thomas Grant III. Not when their lovemaking sessions look like this:
etc. etc.

Also, I'm glad you told Abby the truth about why you lied. Progress. Because old Liv woulda been like
re: Oliva's lack of clap
I think most all of us want Oliva to clap back on everybody. Everybody's shaming her for falling in love. Especially Mellie. See, Mellie has selective amnesia about the fact that she was a co-creator in the Olitz affair. Then she wants to make snide remarks like Olivia's trash. Girl.
I think because Olivia is just now acknowledging the root of her issue with being with Fitz, it's going to be a continuous, daily process choosing not to be ashamed. While I wanted Liv to pop off on Mellie last night, I realize that she still has shame that holds her back. If it took her 4 seasons to stop running and acknowledge she was ashamed, giving a good read from a place of boldness is not going to happen overnight. Overall, Olivia gotta realize the truth is the truth, shame or no shame. And Mellie is part of the reason they are where they are today.
If some phoenix-like version of B6-13 rises from the ashes, I don't want it. Shonda nem can keep that.
Basically, I love this episode. I love this season. I love Olitz. I love the progression of the characters. I remarked how it's been a while since I screamed at my TV during an episode of Scandal and I got to scream last night. It felt so good!
