Scandal Episode 517: Thwack!
YAWL.
Okay, so if you're on twitter & you're a Scandal fanatic like me, I'm sure you saw all the tweets about the episode and how it MUST be watched live. Well last night I had a workshop to go to that was supposed to start at 7:30. Around 6, I got an email that it was going to be pushed back to 7:45.I was hoping the email was gonna say the class was cancelled but it's okay...I had another plan. I was going to email the workshop instructor and ask if I could present early b/c I needed to leave early...but then I decided that was tacky. So I was just praying that he would choose me to go early on in the evening. Then I would stealthily sneak out and make it home in time for Scandal.
So it's like 7:15 when I hop on the B train, which was moving incredibly slow, then I get on the 1 train and it was experiencing delays. This all pissed me off because I wanted to get there early enough so that I can get a seat by the door so I can slip out! But it was like God was like
I know better. In NYC, always leave an hour early to get to your destination...even if its 15 minutes away. I hopped off the 1 train b/c it was stuck at the station ONE STOP AWAY from the station where I needed to get off. I caught a cab and I walked into the workshop at 7:56. I got a seat in the middle in the back. The night goes on and I'm waiting for my name to be called like
Then I realized he was calling people who were last last week to be first. I went second last week so I was the second to last this week. God was looking at me like
You ain't gon watch it live & you will deal. Cool. So my name finally got called & I did my work. Great. I walk out the workshop at 9:50 to get a call from MY MOTHER *who DOES NOT watch Scandal* talking about "What happened to Oliva...?" and I immediately go
She was finna spoil it for me, y'all. I had to tell her I didn't watch yet so she can't tell me what happened! But listen, if my mother called me about the episode? Pastor Shon? The episode HAD to be flames!
There's so much to unpack in this episode. It was PHENOMENAL! Oh my goodness. Scandal's been coming with the heat! Oh my God. I feel a Scandal binge watch coming on this weekend!
Love & Hip Hop DC
I don't watch sneak peeks but of course, I see what people say on twitter about it. Y'all, I swore we were going to have a Tara-Peter Gunz-Amina situation. It woulda been tacky, but I entertained the thought for a minute. Humor me: Abby tells Fitz that Lillian Forrester is pregnant and Fitz is like "oh my God but I'm gon take care of mines" then Liv finds out and she's jealous, especially since she aborted their baby, but she's gonna have the last laugh and she gets pregnant by Fitz. Then that takes care of when she comes back for season 6 preggers.
I know, I know Viv. Forgive my messiness y'all. It's a good thing I'm not a writer of the show and I have no clue what's actually going on in these people's lives. But I couldn't resist my inner messy.
Back to our regularly scheduled programming.
Abby really jumped the gun here. In hindsight, sis, you started off on the wrong foot. Shoulda known it was all downhill for you the rest of the episode. Unless you have surveillance and hardcore proof the girl was pregnant, you had NO business telling the president something like that with the confidence in which you did! Turns out, like it did for most of the episode, you were strong & wrong. You were off key, sis.
The Latino Vote: Major Key
Mellie's gloating about how her approval ratings are up, something she hasn't experienced in eons, when Liv gotta pull her back down to reality. The war is not done. It's time to get the Latino vote because, duh, Latinos are not all the same and some of them are conservative. Takes a lot of convincing, including pitching her meeting the Latino Cardinal, but before Mellie can make a decision (which we all know before she vocalizes anything) Liv gets a phone call...
ANDREW'S BACK
OPA is on the stalking tip now. Lillian just left a room and Liv slips in right behind her. Lo & behold, it's Andrew.
Last we saw him, he was a vegetable. BUT GOD!
The praise break didn't last very long though. Now that God healed him from being a mute, he decided to use his new voice to snitch about the prez going to war over Olivia (#BringBackOurGirl) all the while leaving out his involvement.
But I'll tell you this one thing, 'drew--you can play if you want to but Olivia is not. playing. games. witchu. NOT when you left her fuh dead.
Kitchen Convos
I had to remember who put the order to knock Andrew out! I'm gonna go back to rewatch but in the meanwhile, I went to the Scandal Wiki where it says Mellie told Liz that Andrew was OC and needed to be put down. Then Liz went to Huck because--who else would you go to--and he was like oh nah, I'm saved...but apparently not that saved b/c he injected him with something so that he would have a severe stroke. So when Fitz asked who was responsible for it in the first place, Mellie & Liz the first to say they had no involvement when them two heffers orchestrated it!
I'm so sick of them. I promise you I am.
Anyways, so Liz has the bright idea to kill the story. FAILURE waiting to happen. Why is she even invited in the kitchen? She can't even cook! Ugh she gets on my last nerve. Then Mellie offers to talk to Andrew herself. Here goes Liz again talkin some "Why? B/c your love for him runs so deep?" BIH. You share men for sport, stfu.
Here comes Liz again with yet another failed idea--Mellie drops out. But does she really think her candidate and Fitz would get by unscathed? I declare this woman is an idiot.
Cyrus in the corner kee kawing laughing at the spectacle, to everyone's annoyance. Fitz lets everyone know he's immune to the bull--to which he received sighs and laughs of disbelief. But when asked why he's still here, Cyrus puts his foot on the dining room table and marks his territory--he ain't screwing ya fatha no more but he still runs the joint. Settle down, Cy. You're never invincible.
Liz suggests the one option no one wants to say but everyone is thinking. She turned out to be right--it was the way to go. Don't mean I like you, heffer. But in the moment, it was vehemently rejected...it's wrong, we're not animals, etc. etc.
Then Abby comes forth in some faux I'm-the-boss tone/demeanor and starts telling everyone what they're gonna do--Mellie's gonna talk to 'drew (which she said she would do in the beginning) and they were going to shred everything that connects Fitz & Co. to West Angola. Glad you learned how to dictate a room from Liv but you should never let that get to your head. Ever.
As with any Olitz interaction, it couldn't and wouldn't end with some petty. As Liv was walking out to leave, Fitz grabbed her & thanked her for coming when she called. She clarified that Abby called her...not him. Welp!
Nightmare From Hell
Her nightmare scared me!!! Anytime you have your back turned, it's not a good thing. I don't know how, but she had an epiphany that it was Huck who turned 'drew into a vegetable.
OPA Right Quick
These weird ass employees of OPA are making things more and more awkward for Marcus. They don't know how to be normal and it's not only frustrating to Marcus but it's frustrating to me. Knowing all that I know though, I understand why Huck, Quinn & Liv don't want him to know things. Once he sees their dark side, it effs up everyone around them and they don't want Marcus to go down like that. Just look at how they changed Quinn. Another thing to note: Liv never wanted Marcus to work at OPA because she didn't want anybody else in their biz-ny-ee. Still doesn't warrant her treating him like that...he's on her payroll. Treat him like a human being with decency & respect, for goodness sake!
Beauty & the Beast
Liz appeals to Huck to kill Andrew...to which he again has to reiterate to the ignorant bih, he is saved and he got Jesus now. He don't go around killing folk anymore. But then he took the info about where 'drew stayed and I got nervofused.
The Vargas Campaign
ABV (Alex Bae Vargas) shows the gov'na and Cyrus an ad that he intends to put out showing the gov'nas strength & bravery--something of value to the American people. The gov'na doesn't want to use an ad capitalizing on people's death so he shuts it down. ABV is tight because Cyrus agrees with the gov'na...almost just to go against him. So now ABV gotta be inspector gadget and he starts with figuring out who Tom is.
BRUH. IF HE FINDS OUT THE STUNT CYRUS PULLED THAT GOT THE GOV'NA SHOT WAS STAGED!?
Tread lightly, ABV.
Mellie & Uncle Andrew Reunite
'drew can smell Mellie's bull crap from when she enters the door. But Mellie diverts and starts this sob story about how 'drew didn't choose her and broke her heart. Mellie's game looked like it was working until he tried to slip her hand down his pants (which was so gross). She ain't that good at faking. Ha!
When PTSD Strikes...
Mellie's rambling on about her failings w/ Andrew but I'm not listening and neither is Liv. I'm not listening b/c anytime Mellie complains, I tune her out. Liv's not listening b/c she's in the midst of a traumatic flashback. Finally Liv tells her to shut the hell up, sit her ass down & let her handle it.
The Devil & His Demon
Liv appeals to Satan and one of his imps about helping her play above board to shut down the story Lillian intends to post about Fitz. They agree, but not without Lucifer reminding her that she is his spawn and at the end of the day, she's going to do what he would...
Now when this moment happened, I knew she would do what Rowan would, but she wouldn't do it for the same reason. Rowan kills people w/o emotion b/c they're getting in his way or a threat. Liv...well, we'll get to that later.
That moment when Jake told Liv to "say thank you"...
I can't.
Bunker Deals
Here comes Huck...probz hit 'drew with some m99 (I thought he put him back into a stroke). When 'drew comes to, he's scared for his life b/c first person he sees is Huck. Liv promises him the people in the room with him are the least his worries (TUH!) & that there are people on the outside who want to kill him (more like inside). She's willing to protect him. He says he wants 10 million and a book deal that she'll represent him in, to which she laughs like nigga, yeah right!
But because 'drew is actual toilet scum, he's sticking to his guns. Liv & Abby will take the request to the team.
Kitchen Convos Pt. 2
They've come to the best worst decision--pay 'drew to shut the hell up. Liz says she'll put in her "fair share" of 5 million. Cyrus said he'll put in his fair share of $1.
David & Abby are no help b/c they have no money to be of valuable contribution, HELL NO Liv isn't going to give money to her abuser so that just leaves Fitz & Mellie. Fitz swings it to Mellie like, you got it girl! To which she responds, I'll be damned if I use the money you gave me in the divorce to save our asses. I mean, I get it but I don't. Whatever. Right when Olivia's about to offer up her thoughts and opinions on the matter, Fitz cuts her off so quick to hear what Abby has to say. He ultimately manned up & decided to contribute.
Bunker Deals pt. 2
Abby & Liv are ready to hand over the 10 million dollars to 'drew ONLY if he calls Lillian to tell her there's no story and signs a NDA. But Andrew's triflin behind wanted the money first or no deal. I don't know if they actually sent the money or not (apparently not b/c Andrew called their bluff) but the money was "sent" to his account. That's when his bitch ass switched up and said 10 mil wasn't enough--he wanted 20 BILLION an apple pie and a horse with a stable that he wants Abby & Olivia to clean. By now, Liv is ready to fight.
True Confessions of Fitzgerald Grant
Now y'all know anytime Fitz is staring out of the window, he's being real deep & emotional...he's about to make a major decision. When Fitz admitted to Abby that he picked a trash VP I went into a holy ghost shout...
I just wish he woulda mentioned how Liv told him not to choose Andrew & he didn't listen.
So he's basically gonna fall on his sword. He'll claim he faked the assassination attempt on 'drew so he can draw up support for the war. He admits it's all on him. WELL GO ON FITZ WITCHA BAD SELF & TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR WHAT HAPPENS UNDER YOUR TUTELAGE FOR THE FIRST TIME IN 5 SEASONS!
When S.S. Ablivia Hit the Iceberg...
Liv & Abby are destressing and drinking wine. Abby laments about Fitz's decision and labels it as "weak" and "giving up". Liv's like oh no no no, honey bunches of oats. He's being presidential, a leader and he's taking one for the team! He's walking in integrity. All these years, he's said he never wanted this office and he would've given it all up for Liv but when given countless opportunities to do so, despite being blocked by Olivia, Cyrus, Mellie, etc., he never had the balls to keep pushing through for what he wanted. He never did exactly what he said he would. Now he is and I think it's making little butterflies rise up in Liv's tummy for Fitz.
Meanwhile, what's happening to Abby is what has happened to every single person who has worked in close proximity to Fitz--she could care less about how things effect Fitz. She cares more about what would happen to her. She thinks b/c she's been "running" the White House for all of 2 seconds, she can join the ranks of Cyrus and Olivia but sis, their jerseys are hanging in the rafters. You're still playing. They are the big dogs. You are not. & what kills me is you think because you know inside stuff (Defiance, war on West Angola, etc.) on a secondary level, you qualify. Sis, have several seats.
My favorite part was Liv's reaction to Abby's declaration of being a "big dog" and a "monster". Shorty was like:
"...but you can always come back and work for me!"
That imagery was so powerful for me. Here Olivia is, a black woman operating her own firm, hitting a white woman with that fake sympathetic slightly underestimating tone of "you'll never top me"--a tone that is usually given to black people from whites. We stay underestimated and have to work 2x as hard to get half as much...but at the end of the day when Abby tried to work 2x as hard? She was still mediocre.
Dreams Come True...Maybe
Mellie is so excited because Fitz is finally taking the fall for something. But then Liv finds out from Jake that Lillian's story shifted from Fitz & West Angola to Mellie and her extra-marital affairs. Liv's first instinct is that it's Liz b/c she wanted to kill the story in the first place...but what she finds out is that it was Abby. Abby was clearly still tight from the previous night because, I can admit, she temporarily trumped Liv. So you're Liv boss now, Abby? You confiscating hard passes?
mmkay. we'll see.
Dr. Marcus
Marcus comes into Liv's office with the stellar news that the Cardinal wants to meet with Mellie. Liv is anything less than thrilled. He picks up on it and asks if she's okay...Liv contemplates sharing with him, then dismisses him by saying she's not looking for a therapist. She looks at Marcus as if he was this guy:
Y'all gon keep pushing that good black man away and y'all gon lose him for good!
The Final Straw
When Olivia Carolyn Pope made that strut down the bunker hallway??? I knew
Olivia decided to give 'drew one last chance to get the answer to this open book test right. She wants to know what it is he really wants so that she can help him help everybody. Then this f*cker had to open his trap again and basically make a plethora of sexist remarks to her. BRUH. When he called her a cheap slut...there was a look on her face I never seen before. Like, I saw the switch. It scared me, you guys!! But when he started joking about auctioning her? He signed his death certificate right there. She'd already been experiencing PTSD but now? Hmmph. He pressed the right button.
Yawl. I have never seen anyone get killed with a chair before. But it blessed me. Why? Because Olivia killed her abuser. Sucks for her mental well being. But I'm thrilled about it.
Now the difference between her and Rowan is that in all of the 2 people Liv killed, it was emotion filled. She killed men who were apart of mentally harming & abusing her. It just so happened that killing Andrew helped Mellie. But whereas Rowan would've done it to help Mellie, it just so happened that Liv's killing him helped Mellie. Make sense? Also, Rowan woulda went in there guns blazing with intent to kill. Liv had zero intentions of killing that man. But the words he used to shame her was the straw that broke the camel's back.
Bae To the Rescue
This Olitz scene was short but it means a lot in the trajectory of their relationship. He literally picked her up when she was down...when have we ever seen this? They're learning each other outside of the bells and whistles of romance. I believe this half of the season, they've been able to really see each other--the messy, the dark, the horrendous--and that's important! When he promised her everything was gonna be okay and held her!? This was me:
Yup. I'm one of those Olitz shippers who submerge in feels over 99.9% of Olitz interactions.
Anyways, Abby enters and sees the bloodbath Liv created. Shocked to silence, Abby has no choice but to follow Liv's instructions: one hour to call Lillian and tell her the story is dead. Literally. and to NEVER. CROSS. HER. AGAIN.
But let's break this down right quick. We all know the reason why Liv killed Andrew. But to place blame on Abby...that's kinda heavy. It lowkey was her fault but highkey wasn't. Abby shouldn't have went behind the president's back BUT she didn't directly inform Liv's decision to kill Andrew. So...
in that regard, Liv's gonna have to do better. Meanwhile, RIP SS Ablivia.
Her evolution into some form of her daddy is consuming her...she's starting to realize that and it leads her "home".
'drew is dead.
Everybody's talking about how wonderful he was knowing he was trash. But the American people can't handle that truth, I guess.
Tom & Cyrus
<sarcasm> Who saw this coming? <sarcasm> I've seen some disdain over Tom's revealed sexuality...b/c we never saw this coming in all the 5 seasons he's been around...but then I realized we never saw anything of his personal life. I don't care that much. He ain't that important to me. Dah welp. Happy cheating.
Not for long though. B/c Alex is at Michael's door step with the tea.
Shondaland: Where relationships go to die. <-- gotta put that on a shirt too!
No friendship, no relationship, no family is safe.
HomeSweet Home
Liv is at her daddy's doorstep but she is far from free. I've seen parallels to the red door of her daddy's home being like the red door when she was kidnapped. And we all know what happened when she went through those doors when she was kidnapped--the real fight had just begun. So I'm working hard not to be moved by the Olivia/Jake scenes b/c she has to work through that. However, I am thoroughly moved and in love with her natural hair next week...in a high pony tail too? Y'all.
It's lit.
______________________________________________________________________________
Liv experienced/is experiencing 2 extremes this season: Running to Fitz v. Running to daddy. This is all imperative to her journey in discovering herself and what she wants. She has to find the balance between the two--love and family. Prayerfully she'll find herself in the middle by the end of the season and hopefully she'll find a therapist.
Scandal's been knocking it out of the park. Sucks there are people missing it who are ignorant enough to believe that their "boycott" [& I use that term loosely b/c they recorded last night's episode b/c Tony directed it but they're such idiots, they don't realize DVR goes towards ratings too but I digress] will change the course of Shonda's story. Dah welp. Don't want them to watch my favorite show anyway.
What did you guys think? Let's talk about it together.

Home
