Scandal Episode 511: The Candidate
Scandal has been really good the past 2 episodes! I'm excited to dive in.
FIRST OF ALL, THESE MELLIVIA SCENES!?!?
It was like watching Tyson v. Holyfield or something. They came with the fire, they would not back down and it had me like
It was soooo lit. Let's get into it.
Mellivia: ROUND 1
Chapter 2 of Mellie's memoir sucks major. Don't nobody wanna hear about how you felt when Fitz got shot, sis. We saw how distraught you were when you stood up to the podium in 208 w/ tear-filled red eyes talkin bout how you appreciated America's prayers. That's not the tea we wanna sip. What the people really wanna know is why did you stay?
We, the viewers, know b/c we get to see Mellie behind closed doors. But the American people of the Scandalverse don't. Plus it would be great for the viewers to get some reassurance that we were right...ya know, hear it from the horses mouth.
So Olivia is asking all these questions and Mellie is looking like a sinner in confessional--frazzled and unprepared. But Mellie, you asked for Olivia Pope's help...Olivia Pope is what you're gonna get.
WINNER: Olivia Pope
Wake Up Call
I love Susan Ross. I'm not sure how many times I can express that. I want Susan to run because I think she is the most capable, caring, passionate politician of all we've seen. But it's not about what I think but what she thinks. We know from previous episodes that she thinks the job is heavy and stressful. She's expressed numerous times how glad she is that she doesn't have Fitz's job. I want her to run for POTUS because she wants to. And the decision she came to has me conflicted.
A) I'm glad because she stopped listening to the nasty voices in her head started by Melificent that she wasn't a strong enough competition (& boooyyyy did she shade Mellie's character lol) and started going with her gut feeling--that she would be an excellent candidate.
B) She was led to this decision through Liz & David's nasty manipulation.
I'm intrigued with Susan's storyline. Liz & David? Not so much.
President Peté
Abby's blabbing bout this new girl that wants an article about Fitz & his presidency but Cyrus is vehemently against it. When Cyrus starts talking about "our temple" and speaking a lot of French "we we", Fitz is all
which makes me
because HOW DARE YOU TAKE POSSESSION OF WHERE YOU ARE LIKE YOU ARE SOLELY RESPONSIBLE FOR GETTING THERE, FITZ.
Cyrus knows what he's talking about. Okay, he covered up the fact that your ex-wife helped your sons' murderer. It's time to move on, especially since you chose to bring him back as your chief of staff. I mean, how petty Fitz!
Then okay. You don't want to trust him again. Cool. Think about all the times he's correctly advised you. I can't remember a time that Cyrus gave you bad advice. And you still gonna treat him like that? You're so annoying.
Mellivia ROUND 2:
Mellie is being stubborn...she refuses to to answer Olivia's question. What Olivia says is true: every interview she gives, every town hall she goes to, every debate she's a part of she will face that question. Especially since we're in the day of tabloids and social media--people care more about your personal life than your professional life.
But here's the pièce de résistance:
Olivia: You don't know why you stayed!
Mellie: Well do you know why you left?
Well biiiiiihhhhhhhhh come on here!
I think they both knew the other person knew the answer to the question they were being asked. They just wanted to hear each other say it. That moment would not be the time either one does so.
WINNER: Draw
Faux Mellie
Boring. Bad wig. I don't trust her.
Mellivia ROUND 3:
Mellie fixed her mouth to tell the lie that she was "devastated" by the affair and was sure "it was just a phase".
Olivia urges Mellie to dig deep but Mellie's having trouble reaching the truth, especially considering she's sober.
[Shoutout to that "I don't have a therapist" line Olivia spouted. It's funny the writers use what Kerry's been saying since the beginning of the series--Liv needs Kerry's shrink lol]
My problem with Mellie in this scene is she's getting what she asked for--Olivia Pope! And she has a problem with it when Liv asks her questions she doesn't like?
Mellie knew about Vermont!!!!!
But when Mellie basically called Liv and her relationship with Fitz trash?!
You know nothing, Mellie. I hope Liv didn't believe the crap coming out of Mellie's mouth and I hope she isn't gonna allow Mellie to dictate what her relationship with Fitz relationship was.
WINNER: Mellie (b/c she sure knows how to drop bombs on folk. I don't agree with most of what she said but her views are valid bc they're based on what she sees & her experience.)
50 Shades of Nope
Liz & David are gross because they insist on doing nasty things in his office where I'm sure there are cameras and open blinds for everyone in the hallway to see.
#Scan4Ham
Last week it was the fact that Jake's middle name is Hamilton. This week they dropped a line in there.
Susan: "There's all kinds of things I haven't done"
JUST YOU WAAAIIIIITTTTT!!!!
The Break-Up
Y'all do realize Cyrus broke up with Fitz? I hope this is the end for them. Cyrus has had EEE-NOUGH. He tried to dance with Fitz one last time & do something great for the country instead of sitting around watching the President walk around the white house in a robe eating ants on a log a la Reagan. But Fitz being, well, Fitz shut him down. And that probably wasn't a good idea.
Fitz: Are we done?
Cyrus: I believe so, sir.
& thus ended Fitz & Cyrus' relationship. [Except Fitz doesn't know it. Dummy]
Weird Sex
I got nothing.
Bottoms Up
Cyrus outchea applying for jobs and Mellie's all The position has been filled. lol
Mellivia ROUND 4
Mellie finally admitted what we all knew: She stayed because it was working for her. If she stayed, Fitz would help make her president because he owed her. She's finally admitting her martyrdom!
It seemed like it was going to be another "Mellie berates Olivia while Olivia stays silent" monologue but ooohhhh the episode was not over yet...
WINNER: Mellie
Date Night
David took Susan to Gettysburger on a date and I can't trust David as far as he can see without those glasses. It appeared as if he was being genuine but his shenanigans w/ Liz are off putting. I LOVED how Susan said Mellie Grant lacks character and is basically a wuss. I got my life.
Mellivia: ROUND 5
I loved everything about this round. Mellie always wanted a fight but Liv never satisfied her with one, just like I thought, because she knew she was in the wrong. Although we always wanted her to clap back, she really had no basis to.
I love how they pulled the truth out of each other through drunken vulnerability. Liv didn't let it all hang out, but it was enough to confirm what most of us were thinking.
For Liv, she was afraid that she would lose the power she has by being with Fitz.
For Mellie, she thought she would gain the power she wanted if she stayed with Fitz.
They both had an epiphany (we know Liv received one too because when she starts projecting to others, she's really talking to herself): the power is/was in them all along and no one can give or take that away.
WINNER: Olivia Pope--because she let herself be vulnerable, even if for a second and she helped Mellie write chapter 2 of her book.
Yadda Yadda Ya
Fitz will sex any woman that bats her eyelashes at him.
Liz to David: "Let's make a president together"
Marcus connects w/ Huck. That has potential to be not good for Marcus. But whatever. I was tired of douchebag Huck.
The book was leaked! "Explosive, revealing & deeply personal"
The Governer of PA is a charismatic Mexican-American democrat who I am loving right now. The playing field for POTUS on Scandal is going to be better than the real life one.
Predictions
I think something is up with Lillian Forrester. I don't think she's B6-13 but I think she's waiting for Fitz to slip so she can write about him.
Also, there's been lots of talk on the timeline about power and love--can a woman own her power and be in love. I think she can as long as she and her partner are on the same page. If Shonda believes so remains to be seen. I may not agree with what she ultimately has planned for Olivia and Fitz but it's her story and I'm along for the ride.
