Scandal Episode 521: That's My Girl

Long time no blog, eh?

Welp, my life has been going, going, going lately and I haven't had time to write on here...but what better time to re-emerge than for the Scandal Season Finale?  Let's get into it.

BUT FIRST.
My preliminary thoughts are that it was anti-climatic.  idk, I thought it was poppin up until the last couple of minutes.  While Mellie & Jake are standing under falling balloons waving at people, somebody could've been shot 208 style...I mean...leave me reeling for the entire hiatus, why don'tcha?
Guess not.
Also, my thoughts about the episode as it fits into the back-end of the season and the season as a whole are not yet concrete.  Basically, I don't know wtf is up with Liv.  I don't really have any theories.  I don't have predictions.  Things will probably come up for me as I write. I just have generic things I hope will come to pass next season.  I'll share that at the end.
Okay!

Jake Strikes Again!
Mr. Moss (Vanessa Moss' dad) is coo coo cachooing w/ Jake about having a daughter & now gaining a son blah blah blah while Jake makes a drink for him.  Jake hands him said drink then all of a sudden Mr. Moss is having a heart attack.  Yup! Jake poisoned poor Mr. Moss.  When Mr. Moss tells him to call 911, Jake stares at him blankly and tells him: "Sorry
You got money and I need to inherit it through my wife".  Let me stop right here.  WHY THE F*CK IS JAKE SO OKAY WITH THIS WHEN HE WANTS TO ESCAPE ROWAN SO BAD?  LIKE, THE NIGGA HAS ZERO REGRETS.
Anyways.  Mr. Moss kicks the bucket & Jake is giving Mr. Moss the James Novak treatment...walking him through death's door like it's the least he can do.
You not gon kill me then hold my hand while I die.  If you gon be a thug, be a thug, shoom.

 Tom, Dick & Cyrus
Anybody saw this coming?  I mean seriously.  It's really gross.
Tom found Michael & Ella.  Cyrus is just grateful he knows where they are and that they're safe.  Now to "bigger" business--finding a VP pick.

David Rosen for VP?
Y'all 'member in Season 1 when Liv got David to do her bidding for Sully St. James by threatening his aspiration for the democratic ticket?  Welp.  The time finally arrived for his bid but it's via the person he least expected: Cyrus, lord of darkness.  Hook, line & sinker, though!  Cyrus butters him up real good by telling about how both he & Vargas are cut from the same cloth--squeaky clean men who want to make the world a better place.  Cyrus knows the right thing to say, eh?

&...Mellie's VP?
They're looking for someone Male, Married & Military (3 Ms) b/c America can't stand 2 women on the ticket...or a single person on the ticket...
They come down to 3 guys...they're vetting them & they're vetting them but I wasn't really paying attention b/c I just know Shonda's not gonna choose some irrelevant to be Mellie's VP pick!  They hyped it up so I knew it was gonna be more surprising than the average Joes they tried to sell us in the beginning.

Meanwhile...
Edison comes to OPA to report what Jake told him to tell Liv...that he needed her to save him & that he's chasing the sun.  When Liv is dismissive, Edison is uber confused like, he's your father's prisoner!  Save him Save him! & I'm all...
BECAUSE I AM SICK AND TIRED OF BEING SICK AND TIRED OF THIS MAN TRYING TO RUN AWAY FROM HIS PROBLEMS AND BEGGING FOR LIV TO PROVIDE A MEANS OF ESCAPE.  FITZ HAD THE SAME PROBLEM AND YA KNOW WHAT, IT'S COMPLETE AND UTTER TRASH.  YOU ARE A GROWN ASS PRIVILEGED ASS WHITE MAN WHO CAN LITERALLY DO ANYTHING IN LIFE BUT YOU NEED OLIVIA TO SAVE YOU!? IT'S NOT EMPOWERING FOR EITHER PARTY IN EITHER WAY. & I MEAN DAMN, SAVE YOURSELF, NIGGA!  now as I rant this, I am very conscious of what Shonda nem are doing: usually women are portrayed to be damsals in distress that the men "save"...with Scandal they have been able to flip the script and make this woman the savior of these male damsals in distress--to that I say OKAY WE GET IT BUT LIV GOT BETTER THINGS TO DO I KNOW SHE DO!
Then here come Huck with the prologue to the "Save Jake" musical--he shows Liv an article confirming the death of Mr. Moss.  Again, Olivia reiterates that she's not going to save Jake b/c she doesn't want him to die.  WHY ALL THIS PRESHA GOTTA FALL ON LIV'S SHOULDERS, DAMN!

Frankie's Dance With the Devil
Rowan is massaging Vargas' feet, telling him how beautiful he is, feeding him strawberries under the guise of a "donor meeting" when Cyrus walks in like...
But Cy gotta act like he never saw Satan before so he shakes his hand.  Frankie tells Cyrus he wants Rowan's money support and leaves the two alone to chat.  Y'all know Rowan don't ever come through without some FIRE blackmail material.  And apparently, he always has a plan B,C,D-Z.  Since Edison is out of the picture, he wants Jake on Frankie's ticket.  Cyrus shoots it down and Rowan, ever ready always steady, drops the Harrisburg bomb.  He gon snitch if Cyrus doesn't do as he says.
So basically Cyrus has no choice.

Fitz On the Comeup
Abby's debriefing Fitz on convention business--his speech and alluhdat--and Fitz is being *gasps* amenable!
He's gonna do whatever Mellie asks him to do.  Abby is SHOCKDT.  Well, Fitz no longer has much of a care to give since he's about to blast the joint in 5 months so...what the hay!  #MinusWell not make things any harder than they need to be, right?  Makes sense.  Then he starts talking about where he'll end up--Paris, London, Santa Barbara, Vermont...VERMONT!?  This nigga still holding on.
Abby has no idea why he would mention a random state like Vermont...but he knows...we know...

HELL NO
When Vargas asks Cyrus what he thinks about Jake, Cyrus goes on to tell Vargas why he believes he's trash.  Jake killed his husband, he's a traitor, he's a b*tch, he's trash, he sits at the right hand of Satan, he's a snake, etc.  Guys, it's all in the text.  Jake is grade A basura.
Too bad Frankie didn't hear a word of what Cyrus said cuz it was all a daydream.  Irl, Cyrus said "Jake is great!"

Uninteresting Scene
Liz screws David into being Vargas' VP.  Doing what she does best, I guess.

Fitz Finds Out
Abby tells Liv that Fitz is okay with all their requests of him for the convention when she walks in on him reading those confidential files from when Liv got her abortion while she was in the WH.
WHYTF IS FITZ JUST STROLLING IN ABBY'S OFFICE & PICKING THINGS UP OFF HER DESK AND WHYTF DID ABBY LEAVE CONFIDENTIAL INFORMATION ON HER DESK IN THE FIRST PLACE!?

Welp. Fitz knows.

Cyrus Venting Session
Cyrus barges into Liv's apartment stressed b/c Rowan hijacked "his" campaign by forcing Jake onto Frankie & Liv is all, "Put your big girl panties on! Tell him no."  But of course he can't do that so Liv asks him why not...what did Rowan have on him...Cyrus is being mum to which Liv promptly shows him the exit.  He finally relents and reveals that he was behind the shooting at the capital to bring Vargas to superstardom.  He said people died for "political Jesus"
Cyrus and his religious/political metaphors, man.  They're priceless.
Cy uses his way with words to put everything into perspective for Olivia:  If Jake is on the ticket w/ Vargas, it's Rowan running Jake.  Rowan will win.  Olivia will lose.  Really, it should be Olivia v. Cyrus NOT Olivia vs. Rowan b/c that's just not a clean fight.  It should be Student v. Master not Father v. Daughter.  Okay, sis.

Mellie v. Fitz
Mellie is ON FIYR b/c Fitz's speech is an 8,000 word love letter to himself.  She storms into the convention center with bae Marcus in tow warning her not to poke the bear...but she's too hot to simmer down now!  Both Mellie & Fitz get an ample amount of time to speak and state their cases.  I honestly got both sides--both had completely valid and reasonable thought processes behind what they did/are doing.  I wouldn't say there was a winner/loser but I will clap it up for Fitz b/c in the end he gave Mellie what she wanted.
I'm not gonna do a play by play b/c it's too much but I do want to come down Mellie Way, if I may, for a moment.  Mellie, you have GOT to realize that Fitz NEVER asked you to do all the things you did to get him where he is.  The fake miscarriage story. Defiance. The forged signature. Baby Teddy. That stupid One on One news story about herself to make herself look good, etc.  You MUST realize that you did all the things you did so that you would get to where you are--on that stage.  Therefore, Fitz don't owe you diddly squat.  Also, you did NOT get there on your own.  You too have arrived on the backs of Olivia, Cyrus, Big Jerry and...you guessed it! Fitz.  So pipe down, hop off your soap box & have a seat, sis.  Just ride the wave into 1600 Pennsylvania Ave (if that's what's meant to be)...b/c you're putting your big foot in your big mouth.
Fitz so special, he don't have the proper clap back.  It's okay, though.  That day soon come.

Olivia's Plan to Help Jake:
Meet him in a parking garage to tell him she wants to help him.  Great plan!
Sometimes you just gotta step out on faith, eh?
She tells him that she had to say those things she did in the church to him so that her father wouldn't kill him.  It wasn't an apology or a recant of her statement...but she just had to let him know she had to kill his feelings so that he wouldn't be killed in the church house.  He don't want to hear it but when she finally gets to say why she said what she said, he didn't flinch!  B/c duh, he knew his life was in danger.
Anyways, Huck tells Liv that in order to save Jake, she gotta take him like a G.  Walk into the front door like a thug and steal him.  Okay, sis.
More stuff happens, blah blah blah, it comes out (via Liv) that Mellie's first choice for VP was a crack dealer...she finally arrives at a conclusion--Jake as Mellie's VP.  That was a real Rowan move, no?

Olitz Confrontation
Liv gotta go awwwwllllllll the way to the WH to tell Fitz that Jake's gonna be Mellie's VP pick.  Okay, sis.  That coulda been a phone call.  A postcard.  A tweet.  You just really wanted to go so you can get him riled up, argue with him, start some mess then leave.  But Fitz put away his petty man and has risen above the shenanigans.  Again, I'm proud.
He invites her to sit, she hesitantly does.  He reassures her that Jake is a good choice.  Cracks a joke.  She laughs.  Then he tells her he misses her...just listening to her.  Truth be told, Fitz rarely did and if/when he did, it was after a shouting match.  Like, think about it guys...she could only get through to him via excessive anger & vocal strain.  So when asked if she thought he listened to her...she brushes off the question but I know she really wanted to say
He apologizes for not listening to her & it catches her by surprise.  Here she is, coming to start some shit and he's over here whispering sweet nothings in her ear.  If she didn't know any better, she woulda dropped them drawls but alas there's still work to be done!
Anyways, he's gonna change his speech simply b/c Mellie asked him to.
AND he said he supported her choice (abortion) [she looked like wtf are you talking about] even though she didn't need his support anyway [her breath hinged...she smiled, said thank you & walked clean out the do'].
I think she knows he knows.  He already supported the choice of Jake like 2x earlier in the scene...why would he say he supported it one more time?  Also he wouldn't know that Jake as VP was her decision...isn't something like that a team decision...more so the candidate's, I'd imagine...so why would he say he supports "her" choice?  She knew what he was talking about.

False Hopes & Dreams
Cyrus tryna figure out what he's gonna do about Michael.  Tom says he'll make it look like an accident (kill him) & he'll take care of Ella, ya know, since he cared for a baby once on a train to Prague.  Cyrus feeds him bull crap that their relationship is his most honest and I'm like

The Standoff
Liv struts into Rowan's house to take Jake after a convo w/ Huck helps her understand that in order to beat command, she must become command.  She announces that Jake's gonna be Mellie's VP & that Jake is leaving with her.  Jake is lookin like a scared puppy, especially when he stands up and Rowan whips his gun out.  Anybody else's heart was not beating fast?
Liv "saved" Jake b/c he's Rowan's "son" (these familial references are supes obvs now. olake is incestuous, guise.) and he won't shoot him.  They walked out of the pits of hell unscathed. Yay.

In the End
David is still losing---he ain't Frankie's VP choice.
Cyrus decided to ditch Tom* & get back with Michael...even baby Ella is there. WTF IS GOING ON?
*Also Tom bout to ruin lives next season
Liv is now officially Command.  So much so, she almost flipped a locker over when Jake said he wasn't gonna be Jake anymore--he wanted to be Pete, the average guy who lives in an average house flipping burgers at Gettysburger.  She rebuts she didn't go through all of that for Jake to drop everything.  She's not about that mediocre life.  Welp, sounds like Fitz all over again...Liv has offered help for both men in a way that she wanted...not in a way they want.  And they remain where they are b/c she tells them to.  She says jump, they ask how high.  The cycle for Liv continues.  Fitz is free from it.  Jake, however, is not.
Jake is no longer Rowan's bitch.  He's Olivia's.
We know who Frankie's running mate is--it's Cyrus Beene.  He got that Bernie Sanders spirit.
Liv is mad and threatens him with Harrisburg.  Cyrus with the clap back: Andrew Nichols.
BIIIIIIIIIHHHHHHHHHH
HOW TF DID CYRUS KNOW ABOUT THAT?

Anyways, Cyrus always had dreams of running for President (or something close to it I guess) & we've known it since season 1 or 2...so I'm intrigued to see how this all plays out for him.

My question is was this always in Rowan's plans? Did he T Jake up so that Liv could knock it out of the park?  Were Edison & Vargas just lily pads on the path to getting Jake under Liv's command?  Whatever the case may be, Liv is unapologetic about being in command and I'm not mad.

Let's see if Jake becomes like Fitz & starts whining about giving up his VP slot.  Let's see if he imprisons himself.  Let's see if Liv becomes a WH mistress again.  God, I hope not.  But let's see.

This Scandal election is like the real life election--I don't care about it.  Frankie's the better candidate to me but Cyrus is garbage.  Both Mellie & Jake are faux politicians.  I'm just blah about it all.  I'm not passionate about one side or the other.  I'm just along for the ride.

In season 6, I'd like to see Mama Pope again.

Also, it seems as though there will be a shortened season 6 b/c of Kerry's pregnancy (yayayayayay super thrilled for her & Nnamdi) but when Shon Shon was on Kimmel, she said she had a plan around it and she wasn't gonna tell...as if we didn't already know what the plan was!  So now I'm thinking...is the shortened season not the plan?
Whatever Shonda decides, I'll be clocked in on time for.  However, I do NOT have time to watch them hide Kerr's baby bump with oversized coats, lamps, people, tables, chairs, statues, etc.  So basically I said all that to say I'm anticipating a January 2017 return for Scandal.  But this is Shondaland and I can totally be wrong.

Finally, thank you guys soooo much for sticking with me & reading this blog when I post!  I'm gonna be doing lots of new things with this blog soon--more personal things--so y'all stay tuned for that!
Enjoy this hiatus!  Here are some great shows to watch to keep you until Scandal comes back.  I watch them and they're great:
GAME OF THRONES. GAME OF THRONES. GAME OF THRONES.
also,
Power (July 2016)
Orange is the New Black (June 2016)
Underground (it's over now but if and when it comes to stream, WATCH IT)
The People v. OJ Simpson: American Crime Story was FAN-FRICKIN-TASTIC
Being Mary Jane will be back in the Fall
& there's gonna be lots of other great shows premiering, I'm sure.
